Pens with Corian |
|
|
Pens can be made of many types of materials. As you will see below.
These pens are made with Solid Surface Counter Top material. The most familiar brand is Corian. Thus I simply call all pens made of Solid Surface, Corian. It's just simplier that way.

| Step # 1 Pen component set selection
There are about 150 different pen component sets ranging in price for the basic kit from $ 2.50 to as high as $150.00 for a high end designer set. Most sets fall into the range of $7.50 to $35.00 for a nice looking, well designed and durable set. This is for the pen parts only, not the pen blank that it goes into. Pen blanks range from $1.00 to $50.00.
Every component set and blank requires 1 to 3 hours of time to complete and assemble.

| Step # 3 Prepareing the pen blank.
Normally a ben blank is 5" to 6" long. if it is made of wood, the wood needs to be cut to 3/4" by 3/4" by 6" long. That is a good working size to start with.
If the material is Acrylic, it normally comes about 3/4" square and 5" long when purchased.
If the material is Corian, I will cut it from larger pieces to approximately 5/8" wide by 5-1/2" long. This is a good working size to start with. Later I will cut it to fit the set of components that I am working with. This material is only 12mm (about 1/2") thick, so I am limited to what I can make unless I laminate two pieces together.

|
Step # 4 Drilling the pen blank.
Each pen kit has a specific size hole to be drilled to accept the brass inner tube. Larger pens may require a hole of 3/8" or larger.
Most smaller pens will only need a 7 mm or 8 mm hole. Drilling any blank is tricky because you want to drill exactly down the center of the material.
Most wood and acrylic is not a problem. Corian can be a challange. Corian usually comes only 12 mm thick. You may get some thicker, but not a lot of colors. Drilling a 7 mm hole in 12 mm material doesn't leave much room for error. The hole may go in centered but not come out the other end in the center.
